Kolkata, Dec 9 (NationPress) A multitude of foreign currencies from various nations, such as US dollars, Saudi riyals, and Bangladeshi takas, have been found in donation boxes established by suspended Trinamool Congress leader and Bharatpur MLA Humayun Kabir for the proposed construction of the Babri Masjid in West Bengal's Murshidabad district.
As of Monday evening, currency notes from several countries, including Saudi Arabian riyals, Malaysian ringgits, and Bangladeshi takas, were discovered in these donation boxes.
Close associates of the TMC rebel leader mentioned that even the team tasked with counting the donations struggled to identify all the foreign currencies received. By Monday evening, over Rs 2.10 crore had been credited to Kabir’s bank account.
His supporters also reported that Rs 37.33 lakh was counted from six donation boxes.
On Tuesday, amid increasing backlash regarding the mosque's naming, Kabir remarked, "Not every brick or rod will be constructed under the name of Babur. After the mosque is complete, a gate will be established in honor of Babur."
However, the planned size and overall design of the mosque remain unclear.
Individuals associated with Kabir indicated that donations have accumulated in 12 trunks and bags. Approximately 30 individuals have been engaged in the counting process, which has been ongoing since Sunday night.
Sources revealed that one of the money-counting machines malfunctioned, necessitating the acquisition of additional machines. All foreign currency has been set aside separately. New donation letters arrived at Kabir’s residence on Tuesday as well.
Materials such as bricks and sand continue to be delivered to the site.
Last week, Kabir faced suspension from the Trinamool Congress after proceeding with plans to lay the foundation stone for a mosque styled after the Babri Masjid in Beldanga, Murshidabad district. The event took place on Saturday despite objections from the Trinamool Congress leadership.
