Imphal, March 11 (NationPress) Three individuals were apprehended in Delhi for executing fraudulent calls and soliciting money from leaders and MLAs in Manipur. They were transported to Imphal on Tuesday to commence further legal proceedings, as confirmed by an official.

A representative from the Manipur Police stated that the department launched an inquiry and took legal action after receiving reports of fake calls made to several MLAs and political leaders, including state assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh. These calls aimed to manipulate and mislead the legislators by taking advantage of the current political climate in the state.

On February 14, police received complaints regarding fraudulent calls from unidentified individuals attempting to sway and mislead the state’s MLAs by leveraging the existing political turmoil.

“An FIR was filed at the Imphal police station on February 15 under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Subsequently, police initiated necessary legal measures. It is hereby cautioned that those participating in these fraudulent schemes will face stringent legal repercussions,” the official informed the media.

He mentioned that a thorough investigation is actively progressing.

The scammers allegedly demanded Rs 4 crore in exchange for ministerial positions.

Reports indicate that a similar incident involved a 19-year-old named Priyanshu Pant, who purportedly impersonated Jay Shah and solicited Rs 5 lakh from Uttarakhand BJP MLA Adesh Chauhan (legislator from Haridwar's Ranipur). Pant was also arrested in Delhi.

Following the interrogation of Pant, two additional suspects were also detained in the national capital.

In addition to seeking Rs 5 lakh from Chauhan, the trio attempted to extort funds from two other Uttarakhand legislators, promising them ministerial roles.

According to the media report, Chauhan received a call from an unidentified number on February 16 evening, where the caller claimed to be Jay Shah.

The caller requested a payment of Rs 5 lakh for the party fund.

Immediately following the call, one of Chauhan’s associates filed a complaint with the police, who promptly initiated an investigation. After conducting several raids, the three were apprehended in Delhi with assistance from the mobile phone records used in the crime.

Manipur police are currently investigating whether these three suspects are linked to the fraudulent calls made to state MLAs and leaders.
