Rahul Gandhi Advocates for Farmers' Rights at Kannur Gathering
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Wayanad, Feb 26 (NationPress) Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, emphasized the crucial role of farmers in India's economic and political landscape on Thursday. He warned that the Union government appears ready to compromise farmers' interests under pressure from the United States.
Speaking to a large audience at the Karshaka Sangamam in Peravoor, located in Kannur district, LoP Gandhi labeled agriculture as the cornerstone of India. He cautioned that any trade deal permitting access to heavily mechanized American farms could spell ruin for small and marginal farmers.
While not outlining the specifics of the proposed agreement, he asserted that it could subject India's diverse landholdings to competition from large agribusiness firms.
“If small farmers are compelled to compete against massive mechanized farms, it will undermine the backbone of our nation,” he stated.
Gandhi also intensified his critique by associating agricultural policies with the government's wider political and economic agendas.
Addressing the situation in Kerala, he highlighted the ongoing man-animal conflict in the high ranges as a pressing livelihood concern.
He described it as a multifaceted issue that demands coordinated policy action, scientific strategy, and immediate protections for affected families.
With Assembly elections approaching, Gandhi urged farmers to play a direct role in shaping the United Democratic Front’s manifesto. He assured that a future government would act as a “service provider” rather than a distant authority.
He pledged commitments such as enhanced Minimum Support Prices, improved cold chain and storage facilities, and prompt financial aid during crop failures or market disruptions.
Positioning the convention within a larger political discourse, LoP Gandhi stated that the upcoming months would reveal whether policies would benefit large corporations or the millions of small farmers who are essential for the country's food security and rural economy.
After the event, several farmers, both men and women, expressed their satisfaction with their interaction with Rahul Gandhi.
“He listened to us and inquired extensively about our challenges. We shared everything with him. He assured us that he would strive to address our concerns,” recounted a female farmer.
