Jammu, May 24 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, expressed optimism on Saturday that conditions would soon stabilize in Poonch, a border district in Jammu and Kashmir. He urged students to dedicate themselves to their studies as a testament to their strength in overcoming challenges.
During his visit, LoP Rahul Gandhi met with families who had suffered from recent cross-border shelling by Pakistani forces. His heartfelt engagement with these families included offering condolences and assurances of support.
Rahul Gandhi also visited a local educational institution where he encouraged students to maintain resilience and prioritize their future ambitions. While interacting with students at the Christian Missionary School, he remarked, “You’ve experienced some danger, but don’t be afraid; normalcy will return. Your response to these challenges should be to study diligently, play passionately, and cultivate friendships at school. Will you commit to this?”
He expressed sorrow over the loss of two students due to the shelling.
In a conversation with reporters, he mentioned that the residents of Poonch had urged him to bring their issues to national attention, emphasizing the severe impact of the situation.
This visit marks Rahul Gandhi's second trip to Jammu and Kashmir following the tragic April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals, including 25 tourists and a local resident.
Arriving early on Saturday, he conducted a door-to-door outreach in homes affected by the shelling that occurred between May 8 and 10.
He engaged with local residents and assessed the damage firsthand. His visit aimed to convey solidarity with grieving families.
In Poonch, he met the parents of 12-year-old twins, Zoya and Zain, who lost their lives in the conflict.
LoP Rahul Gandhi articulated that his visit was intended to “support the victims of Pakistani aggression” and to bring attention to the human toll of ongoing conflicts.
This is the second time the Leader of the Opposition has visited the Union Territory since the April 22 terror attack. He previously visited Srinagar on April 25 to meet those injured in the attack and consulted with local leaders, including Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
According to Tariq Hameed Karra, the president of the Jammu and Kashmir Congress, LoP Rahul Gandhi visited various damaged sites, including a gurdwara, a temple, a madrassa, and the Christian Missionary School. “He is the first national leader to reach out to the affected community, sharing in their pain,” he stated.
