For the last 20 years, Gujarat has been spearheading an innovative initiative aimed at preserving the world’s largest and rarest whale shark species found along its coastal waters.
A distinctive project dedicated to the conservation of whale sharks has been operational along the Gujarat coast since 2007, in partnership with the Forest Department, the Wildlife Trust of India, and local fishermen.
Throughout these two decades, fishermen have successfully rescued over 1,000 whale sharks that became unintentionally caught in fishing nets by releasing them. The government compensates these fishermen with Rs 50,000 for their efforts.
So far, 18 newborn whale shark pups have been documented, marking a pivotal advancement in breeding.
Since 2007, the Gujarat Forest Department has celebrated Whale Shark Day statewide on Kartak Vad Amasa. This year, the 19th Whale Shark Day festivities took place at Mangrol Fishing Port.
The event witnessed extensive participation from fishermen, and the Chief Conservator of Forest, S. Manishwar Raja, was also present to honor the occasion.
Under the leadership of Deputy Conservator of Forest Akshay Joshi, the event emphasized the legal protection of whale sharks and promoted public awareness regarding their conservation.
On this special day, the Forest Department recognized marine farmer leaders from various talukas of Junagadh district. Wildlife department officials offered insights on whale shark breeding and discussed its economic and ecological significance.
Importantly, the whale shark plays a crucial role not only in Gujarat but also for global biodiversity. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of marine farmers and the Forest Department, the Gujarat model of whale shark conservation is gaining international acclaim.
