Synopsis
Key Takeaways
More than 32,000 tribal beneficiaries in Gujarat are set to receive development assistance worth approximately ₹1,500 crore during a week-long state celebration marking the 151st birth anniversary of tribal freedom fighter Bhagwan Birsa Munda, scheduled from 12 to 18 November 2026. The main state-level event will be held in Chhota Udepur on 15 November in the presence of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
Key Decisions From the Planning Meeting
The programme was finalised at a high-level review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel in Gandhinagar on Thursday. Tribal Development Minister Naresh Patel, former minister and senior tribal leader Ganpat Vasava, Chief Secretary M K Das, and senior officials from multiple departments attended the deliberations. The Tribal Development Department will serve as the principal organiser, with other state departments participating as co-organisers.
Scale and Reach of the Celebrations
The events will span 55 Assembly constituencies across 14 tribal districts, as well as 20 non-tribal districts and 17 municipal corporations. Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi will participate in the celebrations in Valsad, while state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Jagdish Vishwakarma will lead the programme in Dahod on 15 November. More than 17,000 tribal farmers will also receive benefits under the Forest Rights Act, 2006 as part of the observance.
Day-by-Day Programme Schedule
Activities begin on 13 November with Yuva Samvad Sammelans across all 55 Assembly constituencies in the tribal districts. On 14 November, cleanliness drives and worship ceremonies will be held at statues of Birsa Munda and other tribal freedom fighters, alongside programmes honouring saints and spiritual leaders. That evening, Deepotsav will be observed in every household across Gram Panchayats of tribal talukas, with prayers, aarti, bhajans, and traditional tribal dances.
On 15 November — observed nationally as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas — the centrepiece state event takes place in Chhota Udepur. A conference of distinguished tribal community members including doctors, lawyers, chartered accountants, and entrepreneurs is planned for 16 November. Traditional rural sports festivals featuring Gilli Danda, archery, tug of war, Kabaddi, and Kho-Kho are scheduled on the evening of 17 November. Women's conferences across all 14 tribal districts will conclude the week on 18 November.
Benefits to Tribal Families and Artisans
During the celebrations, tribal families will receive the first instalment of housing assistance, milch cattle, saplings, and other self-employment support. Atal Booths will be set up at weekly markets across the 14 tribal districts to display and sell products made by rural artisans and Self-Help Groups, expanding livelihood opportunities. The life story of Birsa Munda will be read in Gujarati, Bhili, and local tribal dialects, with programmes also streamed live on social media.
Background: Janjatiya Gaurav Divas
Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated the observance of 15 November as 'Janjatiya Gaurav Divas' in 2021 to honour Birsa Munda's contribution to India's freedom struggle and his enduring significance for tribal communities. The Gujarat edition of the celebrations this year is among the largest in the state's history in terms of outreach and financial assistance. Chief Minister Patel directed department secretaries to ensure inter-departmental coordination for the smooth conduct of all programmes.
