Chennai, Nov 18 (NationPress) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy rainfall expected on Tuesday across eight districts in southern Tamil Nadu, as weather conditions are being affected by a strengthening low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal. The districts under alert include Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, and Theni, prompting the IMD to advise residents to stay vigilant.
This current rain event is associated with a low-pressure area that emerged over the southwest Bay of Bengal on Saturday, moving in a northwest direction. Additionally, the IMD anticipates a second low-pressure system over the southeast Bay of Bengal by November 22, which is likely to shift west-northwest and strengthen within 48 hours, potentially leading to increased rainfall across Tamil Nadu in the coming days.
Chennai is predicted to experience moderate rainfall today as moisture continues to be driven inland from the Bay of Bengal.
At the same time, coastal regions in southern Tamil Nadu, including the Gulf of Mannar and the Kumari Sea, are under a marine warning. Fishermen are advised against venturing out to sea due to expected strong winds reaching up to 55 kmph.
Widespread rainfall was noted throughout Tamil Nadu on Monday, particularly in the southern region. Given the extended heavy rain warning, district administrations are reevaluating the necessity of closing schools and colleges.
District Collectors will finalize decisions based on local conditions and the intensity of rainfall. The Union Territory of Puducherry has already acted on the weather alerts by declaring a holiday for all government, government-aided, and private educational institutions in Puducherry and Karaikal for today (November 18). Education Minister A. Namassivayam announced this decision late on Monday.
In Tamil Nadu, Cuddalore district has also declared a holiday for schools due to ongoing rain, as stated by District Collector C.P. Aditya Senthilkumar.
Other districts are expected to follow suit depending on rainfall intensity and safety considerations.
With another low-pressure system on the way and rain expected to persist into next week, authorities are urging residents across Tamil Nadu—especially in the eight high-alert districts—to stay informed about official advisories and take necessary precautions.
