Chennai, Sep 18 (NationPress) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted widespread rainfall throughout Tamil Nadu, issuing a warning of heavy rain in at least 21 districts due to atmospheric circulation and various weather phenomena. Additionally, the IMD has released an advisory for coastal areas, firmly instructing fishermen to refrain from venturing into these waters until conditions become safer.
The latest bulletin indicates that Sriperumbudur in the Kanchipuram district recorded the highest rainfall at 18 cm in the 24 hours ending Tuesday morning. This was followed by Manali New Town in Chennai with 13 cm, Guruvaadi in Ariyalur district with 10 cm, and 9 cm each in Korattur, Parimunai, and Ennore in Chennai.
The IMD noted that the current weather conditions are being influenced by an upper-level cyclonic circulation, combined with lower-level convergence across southern India.
This weather pattern is expected to result in moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms across most regions of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
Strong winds, reaching speeds of up to 40 km/h, are also anticipated. Officials have indicated that thunderstorms, along with moderate rain, are likely to persist in several areas of the state until September 20.
Districts such as Nilgiris, Erode, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Tiruvannamalai, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Tiruchirapalli, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, and Thanjavur are expected to experience heavy showers in isolated locations.
Furthermore, heavy rainfall is predicted for one or two areas in Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Vellore, and Kanchipuram districts on Thursday.
Chennai and its suburbs are forecasted to see cloudy skies with periods of moderate rain, along with lightning and thunder.
The IMD has also issued a warning for coastal regions. Squally winds, with speeds of 40–50 km/h and gusts up to 60 km/h, are expected over the Gulf of Mannar, Comorin Sea, and the adjacent coastal areas of southern Tamil Nadu.
Fishermen are strongly advised against venturing into these waters until conditions improve. Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution in low-lying areas prone to waterlogging and advised district administrations to remain vigilant for potential flooding and traffic disruptions.
