Ahmedabad, Sep 8 (NationPress) The recent heavy rainfall in the upper catchment regions of Gujarat has led to a flood-like situation in the Sabarmati and Vatrak rivers due to releases from Dharoi Dam, Vasna Barrage, and Sant Sarovar.
Approximately 1,500 individuals from Rasikpura and Pathapura villages in Kheda district were evacuated last night and relocated to a shelter in Hariyala village, where provisions for food and lodging were established.
Officials have announced flood alerts in eight villages of Kheda and thirteen villages in Anand, advising that shelter homes be prepared.
As reported by the Water Resources Department, the release included 94,240 cusecs from Dharoi Dam and 96,625 cusecs from Sant Sarovar.
This influx has caused the water level of the Sabarmati River to rise by nearly 3.5 lakh cusecs. Currently, 27 gates of the Vasna Barrage are open, discharging 47,590 cusecs downstream.
In Anand district, the Mahi River's waters have reached Umeta and Khadol villages in Anklav taluka, inundating the Mahisagar Mata temple. Eleven villages in Khambhat Bay and Tarapur are also under alert. The District Collector, along with senior officials, inspected Baroda and Palla villages in Matar taluka to assess readiness.
Departments including health, police, power, water supply, and roads have been advised to maintain a high state of alert. Citizens are urged to steer clear of rivers and flooded areas and to reach out to the control room in case of emergencies.
As of September 5, Kheda district has experienced substantial rainfall, with Nadiad receiving 33 mm (totaling 1,727 mm), Kapadvanj 41 mm (total 1,097 mm), Kathlal 34 mm (total 1,015 mm), Matar 20 mm (total 914 mm), Mahudha 15 mm (total 1,113 mm), and Kheda 13 mm (total 605 mm), bringing the district’s average rainfall to 965.9 mm.
Meanwhile, major dams in the area have reported significant inflows and outflows: Dharoi Dam at 187.79 m with 62,980 cusecs inflow and 35,202 cusecs outflow; Kadana Dam at 126.87 m with 1,73,545 cusecs inflow and 1,47,768 cusecs outflow; Panam Dam at 127.15 m with 48,908 cusecs inflow and 50,508 cusecs outflow; Wanakbori Weir at 71.55 m with 2,46,724 cusecs inflow and 2,46,024 cusecs outflow; and Vasna Barrage at 131 ft with 1,06,830 cusecs inflow and 93,658 cusecs outflow.
