New Delhi, April 19 (NationPress) The rich legacy of hockey in Punjab and Odisha was further solidified as both regions claimed Bronze Medals at the prestigious 16th Hockey India Sub Junior National Championship 2026. Hockey Punjab achieved a podium finish in the men’s division, while the Hockey Association of Odisha proudly took third place in the women’s category.

These remarkable performances underscore the ongoing achievements of both associations in domestic competitions, characterized by frequent podium finishes and the continuous nurturing of players with the potential to excel on the international stage.

Hockey Punjab has showcased a consistent record in domestic events, amassing a total of 33 medals: 14 Gold, 6 Silver, and 13 Bronze across various categories. The team’s achievements are primarily driven by its men’s squads, which have earned a total of 26 medals, including 5 Gold Medals in both the Senior and Junior Men’s categories.

The senior men’s team is a cornerstone of this success, recently clinching the title at the 15th Hockey India Senior Men National Championship 2025, with Jugraj Singh emerging as the leading goalscorer. Hockey Punjab remains a strong supporter of the Indian men’s team, under the leadership of Captain Harmanpreet Singh, with midfield anchor Hardik Singh playing a crucial role. The squad also features dynamic attackers such as Sukhjeet Singh and Abhishek, while goalkeeper Krishan Bahadur Pathak and defenders Jugraj Singh and Jarmanpreet Singh are key components of the defense.

Furthermore, the next generation is making strides, with Manmeet Singh, Arshdeep Singh, and Princedeep Singh transitioning from strong domestic performances with Hockey Punjab to the Indian junior team. They participated in India’s journey at the FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup Tamil Nadu 2025, further emphasizing the pivotal role of Hockey Punjab.

On the other hand, the Hockey Association of Odisha has cultivated a well-rounded ecosystem for both men’s and women’s teams, securing a total of 26 medals (11 Gold, 7 Silver, 8 Bronze). The men’s teams were responsible for 19 medals (10 Gold, 6 Silver, 3 Bronze), showcasing exceptional performances in Junior and Sub Junior competitions.

In women’s hockey, the Hockey Association of Odisha has garnered 7 medals: 1 Gold, 1 Silver, and 5 Bronze. The Junior Women’s team earned a Bronze medal, while the Sub Junior Women’s team secured 1 Silver and 4 Bronze medals, demonstrating a consistent and expanding talent pipeline.

The strength of the Hockey Association of Odisha lies in its robust grassroots culture, supported by academies, excellent infrastructure, and effective coaching systems that provide a solid foundation for young players. Hockey is an integral part of the state’s identity, bolstered by the hosting of international tournaments in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela at world-class venues.

This ecosystem has fostered a diverse talent pool. Among the men, Amit Rohidas stands out for India, and Amandeep Lakra has emerged as a promising drag-flicker from Rourkela. Additionally, players such as Shilanand Lakra, Sudeep Chirmako, and Nilam Sanjeep Xess exemplify the depth of talent arising from the system.

In the women’s category, the Hockey Association of Odisha continues to nurture gifted young players, with Sunelita Toppo emerging as a bright prospect, alongside Ajmina Kujur and Sujata Kujur, showcasing their growing prowess in the sport.
