Hyderabad, Dec 10 (NationPress) The Hyderabad Police have filed charges against five individuals, including a neurosurgeon and two hospital staff members, in connection with the tragic deaths of two men attributed to an anaesthetic injection.

Following the discovery of two deceased men in an autorickshaw in the Chandrayangutta area, authorities announced on Wednesday that they had successfully solved the case, resulting in the arrest of three individuals involved in the unlawful acquisition, distribution, and administration of an anaesthetic drug.

As outlined by the police, S. Jaipal Reddy, a neurosurgeon and the Chairman and MD of ABS Hospitals, along with his assistant Mohammed Vikaruddin, neglected to secure Atranium injections after a surgical procedure. This oversight provided an opportunity for ward boy Choude Akash to pilfer the remaining injections, which were subsequently sold illegally and ultimately led to the demise of two individuals.

K. Sreekanth, the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police for the South East Zone, disclosed the details of the case during a press briefing.

The suspects face charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

The two victims, Syed Irfan (27) and Jhangir Khan (25), both of whom were autorickshaw drivers, were found deceased inside their vehicle under the jurisdiction of the Chandrayangutta Police Station on December 3.

Investigations indicated that they succumbed after receiving an Atranium 25 mg injection.

The police were able to resolve the case based on the testimony of Saif Bin Akram, who survived after receiving a one ml injection alongside the deceased.

According to police findings, on the evening of December 2, Syed Irfan and Saif Bin Akram reached out to their friend Jahangir Khan requesting a ‘Termine’ injection, which they had been using regularly. Jahangir then contacted his acquaintance Yamjala Kalyan, who in turn reached out to Jarpati Shiva Shankar, an autorickshaw driver known for supplying such substances.

Shiva informed them that Termine was not available but forwarded images of Atranium 25 mg anaesthesia injections. Jahangir purchased these injections. Around midnight, Irfan and Saif acquired two syringes from a pharmacy and met Jahangir and Kalyan at MBNR X Road. At the location, Jahangir produced four ampoules of Atranium 25 mg, and Irfan filled three syringes (02 ml ×2, 05 ml ×1) with the drug. Irfan administered 1 ml to Saif, who immediately experienced dizziness. Fearing the situation, Kalyan fled.

Eventually, Saif regained consciousness and observed that Irfan and Jahangir had consumed the remaining injections and had subsequently collapsed.

Based on Saif’s account, police apprehended Kalyan, who used to reach out to Shiva for Termine injections. On December 2, Kalyan, accompanied by Jahangir, visited Shiva’s residence and purchased four ampoules of Atranium for Rs 2,000.

Shiva confessed to his own addiction to ganja, liquor, and Termine injections, stating that he acquired Termine injections from Akash and resold them to Kalyan and others.

Akash, another drug addict, had been employed at ABS Hospital as a ward boy since November 15. He admitted to stealing a pack of four Atranium 25 mg ampoules during his cleaning duties on November 26 and hiding them at his home. The following day, he sold the ampoules to Shiva.

The police indicated that neurosurgeon Jaipal Reddy had ordered 25 Atranium 25 mg injections from a pharmacy on November 25. The next day, he utilized four injections for a surgical procedure and left the remaining vials unsecured in the operating room. This negligence allowed Akash to steal the leftover injections, which were later illicitly sold and misused, ultimately resulting in the deaths of Jahangir and Syed Irfan, according to the police.

The hospital's management also failed to issue a proper invoice for the Atranium 25 mg injections, thereby violating the regulations of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.

Mohammed Vikaruddin, who is enrolled in a GNM program at a nursing school, has been working as a surgeon's assistant at ABS Hospital for the past year. On November 26, he organized all medications in the operating theatre, including 25 vials of Atranium 25 mg, but neglected to secure the remaining vials after the surgery.
