Srinagar, March 18 (NationPress) An improvised explosive device (IED) was uncovered on Tuesday by security personnel in the Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir.

According to officials, the IED was located in Habdipora village this afternoon. “The bomb disposal squad was promptly summoned to safely neutralize the IED. The vicinity has been sealed off,” the officials reported.

IEDs are often placed along highways and roads by terrorists aiming to target military vehicles, security forces, and even VIP convoys.

These explosive devices are typically rudimentary and can be detonated either through pressure or remote control.

Historically, IEDs have inflicted significant harm on military personnel, security forces, and the J&K Police.

To combat the risks posed by IEDs, road opening parties (ROPs) of security forces are deployed on highways and roads at dawn, equipped with metal detectors, sniffer dogs, and other electronic devices to secure routes before allowing movement of army, security forces, police, or VIP convoys.

Terrorists have also occasionally targeted civilians by planting IEDs in crowded market areas to disrupt peace in the region.

An IED is defined as a bomb that is manufactured and deployed in a manner that deviates from traditional military engagement. It can consist of conventional military explosives, such as artillery shells, linked to a detonating mechanism. IEDs are frequently utilized as roadside bombs.

The term ‘IED’ was first used by the British Army during the conflict in Northern Ireland to describe booby traps set by the IRA and became widely adopted in the US during the Iraq War.
