Security Forces Thwart Potential Attack by Defusing IED in Shopian, J&K
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Srinagar, April 8 (NationPress) Security forces successfully identified and neutralized an improvised explosive device (IED) that was planted by militants in Shopian district of J&K on Wednesday, according to officials.
The IED was discovered along the Zainpora-Chitargam roadway during a regular sanitization operation early in the morning. It was designed to target vehicles belonging to security personnel traversing this route.
Following the temporary halt of traffic on the Zainapora-Chitargam road, the Bomb Disposal Squad was summoned to safely dismantle the IED.
IEDs, often referred to as “homemade” bombs, are destructive devices employed by insurgents to inflict harm on property and cause injury or fatalities. These devices are typically composed of conventional military components, chemical materials, or repurposed explosives.
Utilized mainly by guerrilla and terrorist factions, IEDs play a critical role in asymmetric and urban warfare tactics, as well as in terrorist activities.
These devices are frequently employed in unconventional warfare, often camouflaged as roadside bombs or hidden within vehicles. IEDs consist of a switch, an initiator (detonator), an explosive charge, and a containment unit, varying in size from small pipe bombs to large vehicle-borne IEDs (VBIEDs) capable of causing substantial devastation.
Commonly found along roadsides, within culverts, or buried underground, IEDs are highly adaptable and represent a significant threat to both security forces and civilians, contributing notably to casualties in various global conflicts.
Security forces regularly deploy Bomb Disposal Squads (BDS) to mitigate these dangers.
To ensure the safety of their operations, road opening teams (ROPs) from the military and other security agencies are dispatched at dawn to search for IEDs placed by terrorists on roadways and highways throughout J&K. This procedure, known as ‘sanitization,’ aims to protect not only security vehicles but also VIP convoys and civilian road users.
