Is Imran Khan Being Covertly Transferred to a Hospital?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Islamabad, Feb 15 (NationPress) The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has raised alarms regarding the alleged covert transfer of its founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan from jail to a hospital for medical treatment. The party has labeled this reported action a serious violation of his fundamental rights, cautioning that it poses a significant risk to his life.
The party contended that even Khan's family has not been informed about this supposed transfer.
PTI has called on the authorities to ensure that proper medical care is provided without delay, insisting that any medical evaluations or treatments should occur in the presence of his personal doctors and at least one family member.
For several months, Khan's relatives and legal representatives have accused prison officials of neglecting to provide adequate healthcare for him, according to various local media outlets.
The former Prime Minister is currently facing multiple health issues, including reported vision impairment in his right eye, as highlighted by the prominent Pakistani newspaper, The Express Tribune.
In a statement, PTI expressed, "Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf is deeply concerned about the rumors suggesting a clandestine plan to move our leader Imran Khan to a hospital for treatment without the knowledge of his family. This act constitutes an egregious violation of fundamental human rights and existing legal protocols."
The party further emphasized that Pakistani prison regulations mandate that family members and designated physicians be notified before conducting any medical check-ups, treatments, or transfers involving inmates.
"We categorically reject any form of secrecy surrounding the health of our former Prime Minister. Concealing facts once more -- reminiscent of previous incidents -- amounts to willfully jeopardizing Imran Khan's health and life," the statement underscored.
Labeling the delays in treatment as "extremely unfortunate and inhumane," PTI has insisted that medical intervention must commence without further delay, asserting that "no compromises will be tolerated regarding the health and well-being of our leader."
On Friday, members of Pakistan's opposition coalition held a sit-in near Parliament House to raise awareness about Khan's deteriorating health while in custody.
Simultaneously, the Tehreek Tahafuz-i-Ayeen Pakistan (TTAP), which includes PTI, commenced protests outside Parliament House, pledging to continue until Khan is admitted to Al-Shifa Hospital for necessary treatment.
Earlier, the Supreme Court of Pakistan directed the relevant authorities to establish a medical board to assess Khan's eyes, following reports of his vision loss.
Imran Khan has been in custody since August 2023 after his arrest at his Lahore residence related to a corruption conviction.
He is currently held at the high-security Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.
