Is the India AI Summit Crucial for the Global South? Dell Tech Weighs In
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Washington, Feb 14 (NationPress) Describing the forthcoming India AI Impact Summit as “a vital and significant occasion”, Vivek Mohindra, a senior executive at Dell Technologies, emphasized that this event signifies a critical juncture for both India and the wider Global South as artificial intelligence transforms economies and governance.
“This is the inaugural global AI summit to be hosted in the Global South,” Mohindra remarked in an exclusive interview with IAND.
He further stated that India, with its ambitious goals, is gathering international leaders “at a pivotal moment” to articulate not only its own vision but also “the contributions that all of us can make in helping India realize its aspirations.”
Mohindra, who is the Special Advisor to the Vice Chair and COO at Dell Technologies and has previously served as the Chief Strategy Officer, expressed his anticipation for “a wealth of profound dialogue and discussions” at the summit, emphasizing that “a public-private partnership will be a crucial facilitator.”
Positioning India within the global AI framework, he noted that the nation is “exceptionally well-prepared” due to its extensive talent base and longstanding strengths in IT services and software.
With a growing emphasis on establishing AI infrastructure and policy structures, he conveyed his enthusiasm regarding India's capacity to seize this opportunity and position itself as a leading force in AI, benefiting not only its citizens but also the world at large.
When asked about comparisons to other leading nations, Mohindra advised against viewing AI as a zero-sum game. “That is a significantly more critical dialogue than merely comparing how one nation stands against another,” he stated.
He identified India’s long-term development strategies, investments in infrastructure, accessibility for citizens and small enterprises, and governance policies as essential elements for the nation to harness AI's potential effectively.
Regarding corporate collaboration, Mohindra asserted that public-private partnerships will drive advancements as India constructs “its own sovereign AI framework.”
Highlighting Dell's presence in India, he mentioned that the company has operated “for over 30 years,” with India currently being its “second largest global presence” in terms of workforce and research and development.
At the summit, Dell intends to present a “Dell AI India blueprint.” Mohindra outlined three key pillars: “invest, innovate, and evolve.”
“Investments focus on aspects like infrastructure, ensuring a secure and sustainable energy framework to support AI initiatives,” he mentioned, referencing offerings such as the “Dell AI factory.”
“Innovate pertains to elements such as skills development and governance,” he added, while “evolve concerns elements linked to the regulatory framework.”
On regulation, Mohindra advocated for a balance and predictability. Companies require “some assurance regarding regulation so they can continue to innovate,” he stated, calling for “a harmonized regulatory framework that provides certainty for both small and large enterprises operating within that environment.”
Referring to India’s AI governance guidelines released in November 2025, he highlighted that the framework includes “seven foundational principles,” such as “trust and human-centricity, fairness, equity, and accountability,” while also stressing “innovation over scrutiny.”
“I believe the current approach the government is adopting is quite well-balanced,” he stated. Addressing industry-wide challenges, Mohindra identified three recurring issues: determining the right AI use cases, preparing data for AI, and closing the “talent and skills gap.”
Companies must also make decisions regarding whether AI workloads function “in the cloud,” “on-premises,” or “on a PC,” each having its own trade-offs in cost and data control. He added that firms face “the rapid pace of change in this sector” and must remain agile to avoid stagnation.
Mohindra expressed his enthusiasm for India’s potential to leverage this technology for the welfare of its populace, adding that Dell is “eager to deploy all our capabilities to assist India in achieving its AI ambitions.”
The India AI Impact Summit follows previous global AI summits held in London, South Korea, and France, as nations strive to develop policy and governance frameworks amidst swift advancements in generative AI and computing infrastructure.
