India becomes world's 2nd-largest solar market, added 50 GW in 2025
India has emerged as the world's second-largest solar market, after adding nearly 50 gigawatts of new solar capacity in 2025, experts said on Wednesday, 29 April 2026, at the Resilient Futures Summit 2026 in New Delhi. The milestone underscores India's accelerating leadership in the global clean energy transition, with flagship government schemes and international alliances driving momentum.
India's Solar Surge: Key Numbers
Ashish Khanna, Director General of the International Solar Alliance (ISA), told IANS that India's addition of nearly 50 GW of solar capacity in a single year has been the primary driver of its rise in global rankings. He highlighted two flagship programmes as central to this growth: the PM-KUSUM scheme — described as the world's largest agricultural solarisation programme — and the PM Surya Ghar scheme, both of which are reportedly progressing at scale. India's total renewable energy ambition, set in 2015, targets 1,000 gigawatts of capacity and $1 trillion in investments — targets that Khanna said have begun to take shape globally.
