Is India Dominating Global ChatGPT Usage for Coding and Data Analysis?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 20 (NationPress) The US-based organization OpenAI reported on Friday that India’s engagement with ChatGPT for technical applications has exceeded global averages. Data analysis usage is approximately four times the worldwide average, while the use of Codex for coding is about three times higher. Indian users pose nearly three times the number of coding inquiries and around twice as many questions on education and learning in comparison to global figures.
In the workplace, the utilization rate in India is roughly 35%, surpassing the global rate of approximately 30%.
At work, AI is mainly employed for drafting, editing, technical support, debugging, and streamlining workflows.
In non-work contexts, around 35% of messages seek practical advice, while about 20% focus on general knowledge and writing tasks, indicating a rising trend in using AI for education, decision-making, and enhancing personal productivity.
“The pace of AI adoption is outstripping our capacity to measure it, posing challenges for informed decision-making. Signals serve as a means to present tangible evidence, ensuring that discussions around AI in India are fact-based rather than exaggerated,” stated Ronnie Chatterji, Chief Economist at OpenAI.
Adoption is notably higher among younger demographics, with those aged 18–24 sending just under half of all messages, and individuals aged 18–34 accounting for around 80% of consumer messages, according to the release.
Such trends indicate that Indian users are combining extensive adoption with relatively advanced applications, especially in coding and analytical workflows, OpenAI noted.
“In terms of geography, the most significant use of coding capabilities is seen in India’s leading tech centers, with Telangana taking the lead, followed by Karnataka and Tamil Nadu,” it added.
ChatGPT has exceeded 100 million weekly active users in India, positioning the country as the largest market outside the US and the fastest-growing market for Codex.
