New Delhi, April 5 (NationPress) India has stepped up as a crucial provider of food aid to African nations grappling with shortages, including Mozambique, Malawi, and Burkina Faso. This initiative reflects New Delhi's dedication to humanitarian support and the advancement of the Global South, as stated by the Ministry of External Affairs on Sunday.

India has dispatched 1,000 metric tonnes of rice to the drought-stricken Malawi, an additional 1,000 metric tonnes to Burkina Faso, and 500 metric tonnes to flood-affected Mozambique, along with various relief supplies.

According to India's External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, "India's recent delivery of 1,000 metric tons of rice to Burkina Faso is a humanitarian effort aimed at enhancing food security for at-risk communities and internally displaced individuals. This act showcases India's unwavering commitment as a dependable partner in development and humanitarian assistance for Global South nations."

This humanitarian initiative comes at a critical time as many African nations face significant challenges.

Burkina Faso is currently experiencing one of the region's most severe humanitarian crises, with millions requiring urgent assistance, exacerbated by years of violence from Islamist armed groups and political instability following the 2022 coup.

Malawi is battling food shortages linked to drought conditions associated with El Niño, while Mozambique continues to suffer from intense flooding, as detailed in a report by the Jerusalem Post.

In addition to immediate relief, India is exploring long-term partnerships.

A working paper released on March 31 by the Centre for Social and Economic Progress highlights that Africa possesses over 30% of the global reserves of essential and transitional minerals. The report advocates for India to transition from basic extraction or concessional financing to collaborations focused on technology transfer, workforce training, and mutual value creation.

The document emphasizes Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Tanzania as pivotal areas for future collaboration, according to the article.
