Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 12 (NationPress) India's technology services sector, valued at $265 billion, is projected to expand to $750–850 billion by 2035, enhancing its global competitiveness in the AI era while aligning with the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, as per a comprehensive 10-year roadmap unveiled by NITI Aayog on Thursday.
This strategic roadmap from NITI Aayog's Frontier Tech Hub highlights that artificial intelligence signifies a transformative shift in the sector: the focus will pivot from traditional labor-arbitrage services toward innovative, outcome-driven, and platform-centric delivery models.
Five essential growth levers are identified in the roadmap: Agentic AI, Software and Products, Digital Infrastructure, Innovation-led Engineering, and India-for-India solutions.
“India is at a pivotal juncture in its technological evolution. With this roadmap for reimagining our technology services sector, we are fostering an enabling ecosystem that integrates progressive policies, robust industry partnerships, and a cohesive inter-ministerial strategy to fuel innovation and growth,” expressed Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal.
“The government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is dedicated to collaborating closely with the industry and other stakeholders to capitalize on this opportunity, positioning India as a reliable global leader in next-generation technology services,” he added.
S. Krishnan, Secretary of MeitY, emphasized that India is adopting a comprehensive, impact-oriented AI strategy, covering energy, infrastructure, chips, models, and applications, with its technology services sector playing a crucial role in transitioning AI from laboratories to industry.
India is poised to shift from services leadership to a global leadership role in creating AI-native systems.
B.V.R. Subrahmanyam, CEO of NITI Aayog, noted that the emergence of AI is fundamentally altering the technology services landscape.
“For India, this represents not merely a challenge but a generational opportunity to forge new value streams, enhance skills on a large scale, and bolster our global leadership. The roadmap presented today delineates a forward-thinking strategy to cultivate an innovation-driven, AI-enabled technology services ecosystem that supports India's growth objectives and generates high-quality employment,” he stated.
“India's technology services sector has consistently demonstrated its capacity for reinvention — from Y2K to cloud to digital transformation. The AI era marks yet another critical inflection point. What we are witnessing is not the demise of the sector but the inception of a new operational framework centered around human insight, intelligent agents, and platforms,” remarked Debjani Ghosh, Distinguished Fellow at NITI Aayog.
