New Delhi, June 15 (NationPress) India has achieved a remarkable milestone in its wind energy sector, with a capacity increase of over 10.5 percent, reaching 51.5 GW compared to 46.42 GW last year, as announced by Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, on Sunday.
In a statement on the social media platform X, the minister emphasized that on this Global Wind Day, with the current capacity of 51.5 GW and climbing, “we are progressing towards an Aatmanirbhar Bharat, driven by innovation, green technology, and sustainable development.”
“Let’s honor the wind’s contribution to India’s clean energy advancement this Global Wind Day,” Joshi remarked.
Under the visionary guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India’s renewable energy sector has seen exceptional growth.
From solar to wind, our nation is forging a path towards a more sustainable future, the minister highlighted.
According to government data, the total renewable energy capacity surged 17.13 percent year-on-year to 226.74 GW in May, up from 193.58 GW in the same month last year. Of this total, solar power capacity saw an impressive 31.49 percent increase to 110.83 GW, up from 84.28 GW in May 2024.
Joshi stated that clean energy is pivotal to India's progress and pride.
India’s solar energy capacity has skyrocketed over the past 11 years, expanding from a mere 2.82 GW in 2014. Solar energy has now become the primary force behind India’s renewable energy expansion.
The growth in solar power generation capacity is supported by a robust domestic production of solar cells and wafers, which were nearly nonexistent in 2014. India has established a firm foundation with 25 GW of solar cell production and 2 GW of wafer production.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set an ambitious target of 500 GW for renewable energy capacity by 2030, aiming to lower the country's carbon footprint in the battle against climate change.
