Ahmedabad, March 29 (NationPress) The country has witnessed an extraordinary rise in solar power capacity, escalating from 2.82 GW in 2014 to 104 GW today, reflecting a remarkable growth of 3,580% over the last decade, stated Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, on Saturday.

By 2030, solar module production is expected to soar to 150 GW, while solar cell capacity is projected to reach 100 GW, with wafer manufacturing climbing to 40 GW, revealed the Union Minister during the inauguration of a cutting-edge 5.4 GW solar cell gigafactory operated by Warree Energy in Chikhali, Gujarat.

“This remarkable facility exemplifies the essence of India and represents the nation's expanding prowess in the global renewable energy landscape. The plant is designed not only to meet local demands but also to establish India as a key exporter of advanced solar technologies,” Joshi remarked.

The minister noted that the focus on module production has intensified, with its capacity increasing from 2 GW in 2014 to 80 GW today.

“Back in 2014, solar cell and wafer production was non-existent; however, India now boasts 25 GW of cells and 2 GW of wafers. To further enhance this, the government has issued directives mandating that all solar PV modules utilized in projects must source their solar cells from ALM list-II starting June 1, 2026,” Joshi detailed.

He also mentioned that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, India co-founded the International Solar Alliance (ISA) to expedite the global advancement of solar energy.

Currently, over 100 nations have pledged their commitment to a sustainable future through the ISA.

The Union Minister highlighted that according to the ‘Future of Jobs Report 2025’ published by the World Economic Forum, the green transition sectors are expected to create 170 million jobs globally by 2030.

“This 5.4 GW solar cell manufacturing facility will significantly contribute to this figure, generating numerous job opportunities for both local communities and professionals,” he concluded.
