India on track for 500 GW green energy by 2030: Pralhad Joshi
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
India is well on track to achieve its target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030, New and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi said on Tuesday, 12 May, addressing the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) annual business summit in New Delhi. The minister described India's green energy journey as simultaneously building a globally competitive, innovation-driven and self-reliant energy ecosystem.
India's Renewable Energy Growth in Numbers
India's non-fossil fuel capacity has surged from 81 GW in 2014 to 288 GW at present — a growth of over 256 per cent. Solar energy capacity has risen from 2.8 GW to 155 GW, while wind energy capacity has grown from 21 GW to 56.4 GW over the same period. Notably, renewable energy contributed nearly one-third of India's record peak power demand of 256 GW — the highest ever recorded.
India Bucks Global Investment Decline
At a time when global renewable energy investments declined by around 7 per cent, India continued to attract strong investment flows, according to Joshi. The minister said this underscores growing global confidence in India's clean energy trajectory and reflects the effectiveness of the public-private partnership model that has driven the sector's expansion. He credited industry stakeholders as central to this progress, stating:
