Did ISF activists attack our leader in Bhangar area of West Bengal?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 22 (NationPress) The Trinamool Congress has accused Indian Secular Front (ISF) activists of launching an attack on its party members in the Polerhat region of South 24 Parganas district in West Bengal, as reported by the police on Sunday.
The Trinamool Congress stated that the violent incident took place during a gathering in the area on Friday evening.
Two leaders from the Trinamool Congress reportedly sustained injuries from the attack and were quickly transported to Jirengacha Rural Hospital for treatment.
Medical professionals indicated that the condition of the injured individuals is currently under observation.
Local sources revealed that the Trinamool Congress had convened a meeting in the area to bolster their organization in anticipation of the Assembly elections. During this meeting, a group of assailants allegedly intruded and instigated a confrontation.
Reports suggest that ISF activists armed with sticks carried out the assault.
Additionally, the vehicle belonging to Trinamool leader Khairul Islam was damaged during the altercation. A substantial contingent of Kolkata Police was deployed to the area following the incident.
In response to the situation, Saokat Molla, the MLA for the Canning Purba Assembly constituency and Trinamool observer for Bhangar, swiftly arrived at the scene. He visited the hospital to check on the injured workers.
Allegedly, Molla's own car came under attack as well, and he claimed to have heard a gunshot.
"The assault was orchestrated with the assistance of ISF MLA Nawsad Siddiqui. We demand a thorough investigation into this incident," Molla stated.
Conversely, Nawsad Siddiqui, the ISF MLA representing the Bhangar Assembly constituency, denied these allegations. He countered, "The individual making these accusations is the one who attacked our workers in the region. He is attempting to disrupt the peace in the area ahead of the elections."
Siddiqui further called for an unbiased investigation into the matter.
A significant police presence has been established in various parts of Bhangar since Saturday night. Currently, no arrests have been made in connection with these incidents, and the police are actively investigating while monitoring the situation.
It is notable that Siddiqui is the sole ISF MLA in the 294-seat West Bengal Legislative Assembly.
During the 2021 state Assembly elections, the ISF contested in alliance with the CPI(M)-led Left Front and the Indian National Congress. Although both the Left and Congress failed to secure any seats, the ISF managed to win just one.
Siddiqui won the election from the Bhangar Assembly constituency in South 24 Parganas district, which was the only seat the Trinamool Congress lost in the 31-seat South 24 Parganas district during the 2021 elections. Since then, there have been ongoing clashes between TMC and ISF supporters in Bhangar as they vie for control of the constituency.
