Mumbai, Jan 17 (NationPress) The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has issued a show-cause notice to former Mumbai Congress chief and legislator Bhai Jagtap after he openly criticized Mumbai Congress President and Lok Sabha MP Varsha Gaikwad, calling for her resignation due to the party's disappointing performance in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections.

In these elections, Congress secured only 24 seats, which is a decline of seven from the 31 seats achieved in 2017.

Jagtap expressed his concerns, stating: “The party has never been in such a dire situation. The party's condition is highly concerning and the leadership in Delhi must intervene to rectify it.”

He added: “Mumbai Congress is currently grappling with a leadership crisis. The organization is in disarray, and the city chief must take accountability. The Mumbai Congress chief needs to step down and accept moral responsibility.”

Jagtap argued that the candidate selection process in Mumbai was based on reports prepared by the Mumbai Congress chief, thereby placing the onus on her.

In response to his public remarks, AICC General Secretary and Maharashtra party in-charge Ramesh Chennithala issued a show-cause notice to Jagtap, delivered by Mumbai Congress in-charge U.B. Venkatesh.

The notice stated, “Your public statements, widely circulated through electronic media, violate the established norms, discipline, and ethical framework of the Indian National Congress. Issues regarding organizational functioning and internal differences should be addressed strictly within the party's private forums, not through public or media outlets.”

Jagtap was given seven days to explain why disciplinary action should not be taken against him for breaching party discipline and ethics, as outlined in the Constitution and rules of the Indian National Congress.

It further warned that a failure to provide a satisfactory response within the designated timeframe would compel the party to take appropriate action without further notice to him.

Point of View

It is crucial to observe the evolving political landscape within the Congress party in Mumbai. Jagtap's public statements and the ensuing disciplinary action from the AICC reflect deeper issues within the party's leadership and strategy. This situation may influence future political alignments and strategies in Maharashtra, and it is essential for the Congress to address these challenges effectively to maintain its relevance.
