New Delhi, Oct 6 (NationPress) The Congress party has called for the resignation of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in light of the horrific lynching of a Dalit youth in Raebareli. They have pointed to a complete breakdown of law and order in the state, citing an alarming rise in atrocities against Dalits, women, and Muslims.
During a press conference at the AICC headquarters, Rajendra Pal Gautam, the Chairman of the Scheduled Caste Department of Congress, along with MP Imran Masood, criticized the current law enforcement environment in UP, claiming that criminals operate with impunity.
Earlier, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and MP from Raebareli, reached out to the family of the victim, Hariom, whose body was discovered on railway tracks on October 2 in Unchahar.
During the media briefing, Congress leaders presented a video of the lynching incident, amplifying their demand for the Chief Minister's resignation. Gautam has requested Rs 1 crore in compensation for the victim's family and proposed that such cases be expedited in fast-track courts for quicker justice.
He highlighted a disturbing trend over the last decade, where atrocities against Dalits in Uttar Pradesh have surged, with institutional discrimination becoming increasingly normalized.
Referring to data from the National Crime Records Bureau, Gautam noted a staggering 75 percent increase in atrocities against Dalits in five BJP-led states, with Uttar Pradesh making up 26.2 percent of these cases.
Masood asserted that the Constitution is facing threats, criticizing the Yogi Adityanath administration for its failure in maintaining law and order and tackling corruption.
He remarked that crimes targeting Dalits, women, and Muslims are escalating and emphasized that the state government is disregarding Supreme Court guidelines while perpetuating “bulldozer justice.”
Masood contended that the prevailing ideology is not based on rule of law, but rather the BJP's doctrine, which he claims fosters hatred and violence.
In response to the lynching, Congress leaders have expressed their support to the victim's family, with Amethi MP K L Sharma and PCC president Ajay Rai visiting them.
The Congress party plans to form a fact-finding team to investigate such incidents and share their findings with the public.
