The meeting forms part of Jaishankar's ongoing six-nation diplomatic tour, of which Oman is the fourth stop.
Key Developments from the Muscat Meeting
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Jaishankar conveyed India's appreciation to the Omani government for the prompt assistance extended to Indian seafarers during recent regional developments. The two ministers also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.
'Focused on trade, investments, connectivity, maritime, technology, defence and cyber and AI domains. Had a comprehensive exchange of views on developments in the Gulf, and efforts to ensure peace and stability. Our discussions reflected the trust and strength of our strategic partnership,' Jaishankar said in a post on X.
Oman's Emphasis on Maritime Ties and Strait of Hormuz
Albusaidi underscored the centuries-old maritime relationship between the two nations, describing it as a 'strong foundation' for the bilateral partnership. He also highlighted the importance of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, expressing gratitude for India's support on the issue.
'Important discussion on intensive diplomacy to secure freedom of navigation in Strait of Hormuz, we are grateful for India's support. Longstanding maritime ties between Oman and India have connected our peoples for centuries,' Albusaidi posted on X.
Jaishankar Engages Indian Diaspora in Oman
Earlier on Friday, Jaishankar met members of the Indian diaspora in Oman, acknowledging their contributions to both the host country and to strengthening India-Oman relations. 'Their enthusiasm in strengthening India-Oman relations was palpable,' he noted.
Context: Six-Nation Tour and Regional Diplomacy
Jaishankar arrived in Oman on Thursday after concluding his visit to Kuwait. The six-nation itinerary also includes stops in New York and Brussels, signalling a broad diplomatic push spanning the Gulf, the United Nations, and the European Union. This comes amid heightened regional tensions, with the Strait of Hormuz — a critical chokepoint for global energy supplies — at the centre of ongoing security discussions. Oman has historically played a quiet but significant mediating role in Gulf affairs, making this bilateral meeting particularly consequential.
The two sides' emphasis on cyber, AI, and connectivity alongside traditional pillars of trade and defence reflects a deliberate broadening of the India-Oman strategic partnership beyond its conventional contours. How these newer domains translate into concrete agreements will be closely watched in the weeks ahead.
