Srinagar, Nov 9 (NationPress) In a significant move, the Counter-Intelligence unit of J&K Police initiated operations on Sunday across five districts in Kashmir, targeting the misuse of social media by elements considered anti-national, which poses a risk to public order.
According to officials, the Counter-Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) conducted a coordinated series of raids in five districts as part of an investigation into online activities viewed as detrimental to social harmony.
Simultaneous searches were executed in Pulwama, Shopian, Srinagar, Baramulla, and Kulgam.
"This operation commenced early in the morning, following credible intelligence about individuals allegedly leveraging social media platforms to disseminate hateful and anti-national narratives. CIK teams, alongside local police, confiscated numerous digital devices, including mobile phones, laptops, and storage units for forensic examination. The raids targeted various residential and commercial properties suspected of being part of the online abuse network," officials stated.
Officials further noted that this crackdown is geared towards identifying and mitigating elements that exploit social media to incite communal unrest, glorify militancy, or intimidate individuals.
“Some suspects have been detained for questioning, while others remain under surveillance as we verify digital evidence. The operation continues, with more searches anticipated based on insights gathered during initial raids,” officials elaborated.
The J&K Police, in collaboration with security forces, have intensified anti-terrorism operations aimed at dismantling networks of terrorists, their supporters, and sympathizers.
Misuse of social media has emerged as a critical tactic employed by those opposed to peace and stability in J&K. Besides spreading anti-national and pro-terrorist propaganda, social media has been weaponized by terrorist groups and their overground workers to threaten political figures, police officers, and other individuals involved in intelligence operations targeting anti-national and anti-social elements within the union territory.
Moreover, drug trafficking and hawala money laundering schemes are under scrutiny by security forces, as it is believed that the profits generated from these illegal activities ultimately sustain terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.
