Srinagar/Jammu, March 26 (NationPress) Tragically, two individuals lost their lives, and five others sustained injuries in various road accidents across Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday.

Among the deceased was Dr. Tabassum Naz, an assistant professor at Poonch Degree College, who was killed in an accident in the Kallar region of Rajouri district. Her husband suffered serious injuries.

The incident occurred when their vehicle, traveling from Rajouri to Poonch, lost control and veered off the road.

Local residents quickly arrived at the scene to assist and transported the injured to a nearby medical facility. Unfortunately, Prof. Tabassum Naz succumbed to her injuries during treatment, while her husband, Hameed, remains in critical condition.

The authorities have dispatched police to the site and initiated an investigation to ascertain the cause of the accident.

Additionally, another accident took place in Rail Gund, Ganderbal district, resulting in the death of a person from Kargil district in Ladakh and injuring four others, including two tourists from Maharashtra and two from the Ladakh region.

This incident was caused by a head-on collision between two vehicles.

Earlier this January, a devastating road accident involving an Army vehicle in the hilly Doda district resulted in the deaths of ten soldiers and injuries to eleven others. The vehicle skidded off the road at Khanni top along the Bhaderwah-Chamba interstate road, plunging into a deep gorge.

The hilly districts of Poonch, Rajouri, Ramban, Doda, and Kishtwar experience the highest frequency of road mishaps due to their steep and winding roads.

Factors such as over-speeding, overloading, road rage, and unsafe road conditions contribute to the alarming number of road accidents in J&K. In response, the traffic department has deployed specialized checking squads to monitor violations.

Regional transport officers (RTOs) have issued comprehensive guidelines and publicized them through various media, outlining penalties for traffic violations. In cases of accidents caused by overspeeding and reckless driving, authorities may revoke driving licenses and vehicle registration certificates and even arrest parents or seize vehicles if minors are found driving.

Point of View

It's crucial to highlight the ongoing issue of road safety in Jammu and Kashmir. The tragic loss of life, including that of an educator, underscores the urgent need for improved traffic regulations and infrastructure to prevent such incidents in the future.
