Tragic Incident: Woman Loses Life, Two Others Missing After Car Plunges into Chenab River in Doda, J&K

Jammu, Nov 30 (NationPress) A woman tragically lost her life, and two other individuals are unaccounted for after the vehicle they were in fell into the Chenab River in J&K’s Doda district on Saturday, as reported by officials.

The unfortunate incident transpired when the driver lost control of the vehicle, officials clarified.

"The accident occurred at Shiva Bridge on the Chenab River in Doda district during the morning hours. The car was en route from Chariya village to Jammu city when the mishap happened. Following the accident, a rescue operation commenced, resulting in the recovery of the woman's body from the Chenab River. However, two other passengers from the car remain missing, presumed to have been swept away by the strong current and feared dead. The search operation for them is ongoing," stated an official.

The hilly terrains of Doda, Kishtwar, Rajouri, and Poonch in the Jammu region are infamous for their treacherous roads, often leading to fatal accidents due to reckless driving and overloading of passenger vehicles.

The traffic police in J&K have initiated a campaign against underage driving and individuals operating vehicles without valid licenses across the Union Territory. This intensified enforcement followed the tragic death of two teenagers in Srinagar city on November 15, linked to reckless and unauthorized driving when their vehicle collided with a stationary truck.

In Srinagar alone, over 3,000 vehicles, including motorcycles, cars, jeeps, and mini-buses, have been confiscated by traffic authorities for being operated by minors, unlicensed drivers, or in violation of road safety regulations. The Traffic Department has appealed to parents and community members to acknowledge their responsibilities and prevent their children from driving. Allowing underage driving not only jeopardizes their lives but also the safety of others on the road.

The Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Kashmir has urged the traffic police to enforce the provisions of Section 199A of the Motor Vehicles Act, which addresses juvenile offenses. Under this regulation, parents may face penalties if their children are found driving unlawfully.
