Jaya Bachchan Criticizes Disruptive VIP Culture in Delhi
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 23 (NationPress) Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachchan expressed her strong disapproval of the increasing VIP culture in the national capital during a session on Monday. She emphasized that this phenomenon disrupts the daily lives of ordinary citizens and tarnishes the dignity of elected officials.
While addressing the Rajya Sabha, Bachchan highlighted the serious implications of this issue, stating that the constant movement of VIPs in Delhi frequently results in road blockages, traffic reroutes, and significant delays for the general populace.
According to her, whenever a VIP—be it a politician, a senior bureaucrat, or another esteemed figure—travels, public roads are shut down for other commuters, compelling individuals to endure extended waiting times before resuming their journeys.
She recounted a recent experience when the main gate of Parliament was closed due to VIP movement, which forced her and other MPs to wait unnecessarily.
Bachchan characterized this as the most humiliating moment of her 22-year parliamentary tenure, asserting that such treatment is intolerable even for those in elected positions, as MPs pose no threat to any VIP.
Furthermore, she noted that many neighborhoods in Delhi where prominent political figures reside often experience road closures due to security protocols, complicating timely access for MPs to Parliament.
At times, MPs must wait for as long as half an hour due to VIP movements and are compelled to meticulously plan their travel itineraries to ensure they arrive on time.
Bachchan also mentioned being caught in traffic for almost an hour while heading to a farewell event for retiring members of the House, solely due to VIP-related delays.
She pointed out that such occurrences foster growing frustration among the public and cautioned that the implications of VIP culture extend far beyond mere inconvenience.
Expressing her apprehensions, the MP pointed out that emergency services, including ambulances, are adversely affected when traffic is obstructed for VIPs, potentially endangering patients in urgent need of medical attention.
Comparing the situation to other countries she has visited, Bachchan remarked that while VIP movements are common globally, they do not inconvenience ordinary citizens to the same extent.
She urged the Rajya Sabha Chairman, who also holds the position of Vice President of India, to address this matter with the government and take necessary actions to mitigate the issue.
Ending the VIP culture is vital to ensure respect for taxpayers and to uphold the principles of democracy, she stated, warning that ongoing public inconvenience could eventually lead to dangerous situations such as road rage.
