Bokaro, June 12 (NationPress) In a deeply troubling incident in Bokaro Steel City, Jharkhand, a 19-year-old college student named Devashish Kumar was abducted and killed by his close friend, who subsequently concealed the body in the yard of a government residence, according to police reports released on Thursday.
The suspect, Aman Kumar Vats, has been apprehended by authorities.
Bokaro SP Harvinder Singh disclosed that Devashish’s remains were located in a pit within the courtyard of a residence in Gaiman Colony under the jurisdiction of Marafari police station.
Aman, in collaboration with several accomplices, had kidnapped Devashish and demanded a ransom of Rs 25 lakh from his family. When the ransom was not forthcoming, Aman strangled him and buried the body. Efforts are underway to locate additional individuals involved.
Devashish, who resided in Sector-3, Bokaro, had recently completed his Class 12 Science examinations at Ayyappa School. His father, Vijendra Kumar, is employed in a private firm in Chhattisgarh, while Devashish lived in Bokaro with his mother.
On June 10, he received a call from Aman and departed home in the afternoon. His mother grew concerned when he didn’t return and discovered his phone was off.
After a failed search, Rita Devi, his mother, lodged a missing person report at the Bokaro Steel City Police Station on June 11.
On that same day, a disturbing video was sent from Devashish’s phone to his cousin, depicting Devashish bound with ropes, as the kidnappers demanded Rs 25 lakh and threatened to kill him if the ransom was not paid.
Following this lead, police utilized technical resources to trace the mobile location and arrested Aman Kumar Vats. During questioning, Aman confessed to the crime and directed police to the burial site in Gaiman Colony.
Aman also acknowledged involvement in cybercrime. His bank account has been frozen by cyber police, and in desperate need of funds, he devised the abduction to extort a ransom. When the scheme failed, he murdered Devashish, buried him, and attempted to disguise the crime.
Authorities recovered various items from the scene, including the iron rod used for digging the pit, three mobile phones, a SIM card, a 32GB memory card, a liquor bottle, clothes and slippers belonging to the deceased, the accused’s shoes, and other pertinent evidence.
