Is PM Modi Hacking EVMs or the Hearts of the People? Kangana Ranaut Defends SIR in LS
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Dec 10 (NationPress) On Wednesday, the Lok Sabha was the stage for a passionate defense by BJP MP and renowned actress Kangana Ranaut, who staunchly supported the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists.
During the discussion on electoral reforms, the Mandi MP dismissed opposition claims of “vote chori” as unfounded propaganda, emphasizing the necessity of this initiative to protect women's dignity in the digital era and to purge electoral rolls of infiltrators and fraudulent entries.
Recalling her own experiences in Parliament, Ranaut described the past year as exceptionally challenging. “Each day has turned into a spectacle; we’ve faced intimidation, threats, and incessant attacks from opposition members. Our purpose is to learn and contribute, yet they hardly let us continue,” she expressed.
She accused the opposition of intentionally obstructing parliamentary processes regarding SIR for an entire year. “I had anticipated a significant revelation from Rahul Gandhi, but yet again, the Leader of Opposition focused on the same foreign woman whose image was ostensibly used 22 times on voter IDs. That woman has clarified that she has never set foot in India. I apologize on behalf of this House to her,” she stated.
The opposition members mocked her, showcasing her photographs, which she described as an assault on the dignity of women, adding, “Every mahila, every woman, is entitled to her dignity.”
Ranaut further pointed out the Modi government’s efforts for women, referencing the Prime Minister’s flagship initiative 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' alongside numerous other schemes aimed at empowering women throughout the nation.
Addressing the opposition's call for paper ballots, Ranaut reminded the House of the notorious Indira Gandhi versus Rajnarayan case. “Indira Gandhi was implicated in a scandal and was compelled to vacate her position abruptly. Those advocating for paper ballots seem to have forgotten this history,” she noted incisively.
In her defense of the government’s record, Ranaut asserted that Prime Minister Modi is dedicated to uplifting the poor and farmers. “He isn’t hacking EVMs; he’s hacking the hearts of the people,” she quipped, earning applause from the Treasury benches.
She directly targeted the Congress party, accusing its leaders of hypocrisy. “Priyanka Gandhi, indeed, people can sometimes be at the mercy of others, but this nation’s laws are not meant to safeguard political dynasties. Sonia Gandhi voted without citizenship documentation — that’s on record since 1983. Is this democracy?” she questioned sharply.
Focusing on the essence of the debate, Ranaut praised SIR as a crucial “cleaning process” for electoral integrity, citing Bihar’s example, where over 60 lakh entries were removed. “Similar to what transpired in Bihar, our government has eliminated at least 60 lakh voters — be they migrants or other dubious entries. Voter IDs were cleaned, and voter turnout reached 67 percent. This cleaning process must be applied nationwide,” she stressed, adding, “One nation, one election should be implemented throughout our country.”
