New Delhi, April 14 (NationPress) The Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, has put forth a recommendation for the elevation of three judicial officers to the position of judges in the Karnataka High Court.
In its official announcement, the apex court's Collegium indicated that during a meeting on April 14, it sanctioned the proposal for the appointment of judicial officers Rajeshwari Narayana Hegde, Kedambadi Ganesh Shanthi, and Mahadevappa Brungesh as judges in the Karnataka High Court.
"During the meeting of the Supreme Court Collegium held on April 14, 2026, the following judicial officers were approved for appointment as judges of the High Court of Karnataka: (i) Smt. Rajeshwari Narayana Hegde, (ii) Smt. Kedambadi Ganesh Shanthi, and (iii) Shri Mahadevappa Brungesh," the statement clarified.
The SC Collegium, chaired by the CJI and comprising the most senior judges of the Supreme Court, is tasked with making recommendations concerning appointments and transfers within the higher judiciary.
According to the memorandum of procedure (MoP) that governs High Court judges' appointments, the Chief Justice must initiate the proposal for appointments.
If the Chief Minister intends to propose any candidate, that recommendation must be submitted to the Chief Justice for consideration. The Governor, following advice from the Chief Minister, is required to forward this recommendation along with the complete documentation to the Union Minister of Law & Justice within six weeks of receiving the proposal from the High Court's Chief Justice.
This proposal undergoes a review by the Centre, which considers additional background information before it is sent to the CJI, who will then consult the two senior-most judges of the Supreme Court prior to finalizing the recommendation.
After these consultations, the CJI is expected to send his recommendation to the Union Minister of Law & Justice within four weeks. Once the warrant of appointment is endorsed by the President, the Secretary of the Department of Justice will notify the Chief Justice, and this communication will also be sent to the Chief Minister. The Chief Minister will subsequently announce the appointment and will issue the relevant notification in the Gazette of India.
