Is There Anything Wrong with the Demand for a Dalit Chief Minister?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, Oct 28 (NationPress) Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara asserted on Tuesday that there is absolutely nothing wrong with advocating for a Dalit Chief Minister.
“What’s the issue with organizing a Dalit convention? Previously, the high command had instructed us to delay it for specific reasons, and we complied. In the interest of the party, the Dalit community has consistently supported the Congress,” he remarked.
The Home Minister emphasized that to preserve this unity, it is essential for the party to conduct such conventions periodically to communicate the welfare initiatives that the government has rolled out for the Dalit community.
“We also need to heed their requests and offer assurances for the future,” he stated.
He reiterated that there is nothing inappropriate about demanding a Dalit Chief Minister. “The community is merely voicing their perspectives,” he added.
In response to Minister for Large and Medium Industries M.B. Patil’s comment regarding the potential of G. Parameshwara and Satish Jarkiholi to become Chief Ministers, Parameshwara noted that the party is filled with many capable leaders.
“The Congress has nurtured numerous leaders, many of whom have transitioned to other parties and thrived. Our party functions like a training academy; we cultivate leaders and empower them,” he expressed.
Parameshwara mentioned that there are several competent leaders within Congress, and the decision on who to select rests with the high command.
The Home Minister also clarified that when the party chose the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader, no one stated that Siddaramaiah would only serve as Chief Minister for two and a half years, and no time limit was imposed.
“We had selected Siddaramaiah as Chief Minister for the entire five years. If the high command later chooses differently, that is within their rights,” he expressed.
Meanwhile, Social Welfare Minister H.C. Mahadevappa mentioned that if a power-sharing agreement existed, it would have been executed long ago.
“The decision regarding a change in Chief Minister rests with the high command. They will determine and clarify this matter,” he reaffirmed.
When queried about Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s statement indicating he would fulfill the five-year term only if the high command desires, Mahadevappa stated that there was nothing wrong with his remarks.
Discussing the Dalit convention, Minister Mahadevappa stressed that Dalit issues are of national significance and a pertinent message must be communicated.
