Bengaluru, July 31 (NationPress) The upcoming assembly of Dalit MLAs and ministers, organized by Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara—a key figure from the marginalized groups—has taken on added importance amidst rising discussions about the potential for a Dalit Chief Minister in the state.
This topic has resurfaced following comments from AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge, who voiced his dissatisfaction regarding not being appointed Chief Minister back in 1999.
In response to Kharge’s statements, Home Minister Parameshwara remarked on July 29 that it would not be inappropriate for the party's National President to return to state politics.
The meeting is set to take place at Home Minister Parameshwara’s residence in Bengaluru on August 2.
Sources indicate that Parameshwara intends to address the political developments following Kharge's remarks, alongside discussions regarding internal reservations.
There is growing speculation that Mallikarjun Kharge may re-enter Karnataka politics, with indications that the high command is earnestly weighing this possibility, likely to make a decision post the Bihar elections.
Insiders suggest that appointing Kharge as Chief Minister would signify a historic moment for Karnataka, as it would be the first instance of a Dalit leader assuming this role, representing a pivotal and politically strategic move for the Congress party.
This decision could also prompt Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to comply with the high command’s directives and deter him from engaging in actions against the party. Sources also indicate that D.K. Shivakumar, the Deputy Chief Minister and another aspirant for the CM role, would likely support this initiative given his close relationship with Kharge.
However, regarding the imminent gathering of Dalit MLAs, Home Minister Parameshwara clarified on Thursday in Bengaluru that the purpose of the meeting is to discuss the report prepared by the Commission led by retired Justice H.N. Nagamohan Das concerning internal reservations.
Home Minister Parameshwara stated, "Before the Justice Nagamohan Das report is submitted to the government, we need to review its contents. It is essential that there is no discontent or confusion among us."
"This meeting is intended to settle our internal differences first. Once we engage in the discussion, we will gauge the perspectives of the MLAs and ministers. It has been said that the survey is completed, but the report is yet to be submitted. The retired judge has assured us that the report will be available soon," he added.
"Previously, I had convened a meeting at my official residence. This upcoming assembly is a continuation of that—held before the survey at that time, and now following its conclusion. The objective is to eliminate any confusion," he clarified.
When questioned about being previously restricted from organizing a similar meeting, Home Minister Parameshwara remarked, "At that time, there was a plan for a significant rally, and the party requested us to delay it. However, now, they will not obstruct our meeting. If the MLAs wish to discuss, no one can prevent them. It is our prerogative."
