Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 29 (NationPress) In a significant welfare initiative ahead of the local body elections, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan unveiled a series of new benefits aimed at women, youth, pensioners, and workers in the unorganised sector.
During a press conference following the Cabinet meeting, Vijayan announced that underprivileged women, including transwomen, who are not part of any existing welfare program, will now receive a new Women’s Security Pension of Rs 1,000 per month.
Additionally, a monthly scholarship of Rs 1,000 will be provided to unemployed youth from families earning less than Rs 1 lakh annually, supporting them in their pursuit of higher education or skill development.
The welfare pension has been increased by Rs 400, now totaling Rs 2,000, benefiting millions of pensioners statewide. Kudumbashree ADS units will receive a monthly grant of Rs 1,000, while government employees will enjoy an extra instalment of Dearness Allowance (DA).
Pensioners will also see the benefits of a DA revision that will begin in November.
The monthly remuneration for anganwadi workers, helpers, literacy mission preraks, and ASHA workers has been raised by Rs 1,000.
Moreover, the pay for ayahs has been lifted by Rs 1,000, and the procurement price of paddy has been increased to Rs 30 per kilogram, offering much-needed relief to farmers dealing with escalating costs.
This welfare package, introduced shortly after the controversy surrounding the PM-SHRI scheme and the tensions within the ruling Left Democratic Front, underscores the government’s commitment to bolster grassroots support.
Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal noted that these new measures, projected to cost around Rs 10,000 crore, will be rolled out starting from November 1, coinciding with Kerala Formation Day.
While ASHA workers welcomed the raise, they deemed it insufficient and criticized the government for neglecting their long-standing demand for retirement benefits.
“We will continue our protest,” stated union leader Mini.
