Seoul, Dec 5 (NationPress) North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has conducted inspections of various regional factories prior to their official inauguration, emphasizing that the establishment of these facilities represents a "gigantic revolution" aimed at enhancing the quality of life for citizens, as reported by state media on Friday.
On Wednesday, Kim assessed the industrial factories located in numerous counties of South Phyongan Province, including Sinyang and Pukchang, as the official openings approach, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
Last January, Kim introduced his hallmark regional development initiative, intending to construct modern factories in 20 cities and counties annually over a decade to better the living conditions in rural areas.
During his factory inspections, which included plants producing food, clothing, and everyday essentials, the North's leader noted that regional factories have been established in 40 cities and counties within less than two years since the initiative commenced, dubbing the progress as "eye-opening regional changes", as reported by Yonhap News Agency.
Kim stated, "The rural construction and regional-industry construction are a gigantic revolution intended to fundamentally improve the quality of the people's living and lay the material and technical foundations for the independent development of the cities and counties."
He also urged for "perfect" preparations to be made for the operations ahead of the inauguration ceremonies scheduled for this month.
This inspection took place as North Korea is poised to convene a plenary meeting of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea in mid-December, followed by a significant party congress early next year.
In recent months, Kim has been prioritizing visits to projects associated with regional development, seemingly in an effort to highlight the construction of modern factories and other facilities as a significant achievement of his policies during major party events.
According to Chang Yoon-jeong, a deputy spokesperson at the unification ministry in Seoul, these visits appear to be part of initiatives related to improving the populace's livelihoods, aimed at showcasing the outcomes of the national five-year economic development plan ahead of the party plenary meeting and congress.
At the eighth party congress in 2021, North Korea adopted a five-year economic development strategy. The upcoming ninth congress, which intelligence authorities from South Korea believe will occur in February, is expected to introduce another five-year plan outlining its primary policy direction.
Chang stated that the ministry will keep a close watch on the outcomes of Kim's directive to inaugurate all newly constructed regional factories by the year's end.
