Officials from the Pragati Maidan police station detained the 24-year-old suspect, who was traveling in a car with two accomplices at the time of the incident. He had been identified earlier through CCTV footage.
"One individual has been arrested on allegations of molesting a young woman inside a car. A complaint was filed against three men. The search for the other two is ongoing," stated a senior officer from Kolkata Police.
The arrest followed a report from a woman who claimed she was forcibly taken into a car, pressured to consume alcohol, and sexually harassed by a trio of men on the Eastern Metropolitan bypass on the night of November 28.
Sources from the police indicated that the victim, aged 28 and married, resides in East Kolkata. Around 9 p.m. that Friday, while waiting for a ride at a bus stop in the Pragati Maidan area along EM Bypass, a car arrived with three individuals inside, one of whom was familiar to her.
Reportedly, as the car stopped, the young woman was violently pushed into the moving vehicle.
The woman alleged that she was coerced into drinking alcohol laced with a substance and was subsequently assaulted both verbally and physically inside the car.
Eventually, the car left her at the Maidan area before fleeing the scene.
Shaken and with visible injuries, she was assisted by bystanders and taken to SSKM Hospital for treatment.
Afterward, officers from Pragati Maidan police station visited the hospital to record her statement, leading to the filing of a case based on her complaint. The search for the remaining suspects continues.
