'Middle Overs Wickets Key to Pressure,' Kuldeep Yadav Discusses DC's Strategy Against RCB
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, April 19 (NationPress) Kuldeep Yadav, India's leading spinner, emphasized the significance of taking wickets in the middle overs and accurately interpreting pitch conditions following a nail-biting six-wicket victory for his team, Delhi Capitals (DC), against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
Initially, RCB appeared poised for a substantial score, racing through the powerplay, but the bowlers from DC fought back by modifying their lengths and pace on a pitch that gradually became slower.
"We didn't start particularly well. I thought they batted effectively in the initial five or six overs. We recognized that the wicket was somewhat on the slower side," Kuldeep remarked in a video shared by IPL on X. “I was particularly discussing with Axar about the importance of length and the need to vary the pace. Understanding the strengths of the batsmen was critical. For instance, Phil is predominantly a left-handed player, so we aimed to keep him at bay, pushing it wide,” he elucidated.
A pivotal moment arose during the middle overs when DC struck quickly. The dismissal of Salt initiated a downturn, and skipper Axar Patel further hampered RCB by taking out Devdutt Padikkal and Tim David, while Kuldeep contributed with the crucial wicket of Romario Shepherd.
“We managed to get Phil out, followed by Akshar taking the important wicket of Tim David at a crucial time. Then, obviously, I was brought in to account for Romario. Picking up wickets is vital,” Kuldeep stated.
From a solid position of 105/3, RCB stumbled to 175/8, scoring only 29 runs in the last five overs, as DC's bowlers, including T Natarajan, Lungi Ngidi, and Mukesh Kumar, executed their strategies flawlessly.
Kuldeep believes that consistently taking wickets is essential, especially on a small ground like the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, where momentum can swiftly shift.
“Whenever I play here, my primary focus is on securing wickets in the middle overs. If I clinch one wicket, it boosts my rhythm, and if I get another, it intensifies the pressure on the opposition. That was my strategy, particularly in this venue. On a smaller ground, you have the chance to turn the game in your favor,” he added.
Regarding the match, while chasing 176, DC faced an early setback from Bhuvneshwar Kumar, dropping to 18/3 by the end of the third over. Nevertheless, KL Rahul (57) and Tristan Stubbs (60 not out) formed a vital 76-run partnership to stabilize the innings.
The contest tightened again in the final overs, but David Miller's experience shone through as he hit two sixes and a four in the last over, leading DC to victory with a ball remaining.
