New Delhi, May 5 (NationPress) Anil Kumble, the iconic former captain of India and a legendary spinner, commended opener Prabhsimran Singh and Arshdeep Singh for their pivotal roles in leading the Punjab Kings to a commanding 37-run victory against the Lucknow Super Giants in Dharamshala on Sunday.
Prabhsimran showcased his talent with a stunning 91 off 48 balls, featuring seven sixes and six fours, while skipper Shreyas Iyer added 45 runs from 25 balls, propelling the team to a total of 236/5 in their allotted 20 overs.
In response, Arshdeep spearheaded the bowling attack, achieving three crucial wickets of Mitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram, and Nicholas Pooran during the powerplay, effectively dismantling LSG's chances. Despite Ayush Badoni scoring 74 off 40 balls, Lucknow fell short at 199/7, allowing Punjab to secure two points and ascend to the second position in the points table.
Prabhsimran was honored as the Player of the Match for laying the groundwork for Punjab's substantial win in Dharamshala.
“He’s (Prabhsimran) demonstrated his ability to play a variety of shots; ramp shots, pulls, hooks, reverse slogs, and sweeps. This season, his consistency has been remarkable. In the last three matches, he has performed exceptionally well. Today, after being dropped on 21, he capitalized on the opportunity, ensuring his runs were significant deep into the innings. He has been a key player for Punjab,” Kumble stated on JioHotstar.
Kumble also highlighted Arshdeep’s powerplay performance as a critical factor in Punjab Kings’ commanding victory.
“This was a crucial moment for momentum - it started with the bat, reaching 236, a challenging target to chase. In such matches, the powerplay is vital. Arshdeep Singh set the tone excellently, swinging the ball both ways, maintaining the right line and length, and executing simple strategies. He dismantled LSG’s top order - their most dangerous batsmen - and that was the turning point. His three wickets in the powerplay established a solid foundation, supported perfectly by the other bowlers,” he noted.
The former spinner further discussed the playoff scenarios, emphasizing the importance of each game in the race for the top four. Kumble pointed out that the Delhi Capitals must secure a win against Sunrisers Hyderabad in their upcoming match to strengthen their playoff ambitions.
“It all hinges on DC first - they face SRH today. A win would take them to 14 points before they meet Punjab, turning that match into a virtual semi-final. The winner will have a significantly better chance of qualifying, although the loser could still make it based on other results.
“For Delhi, it’s essential to defeat SRH and reach 14 points. The challenge against Punjab follows. If Punjab triumphs over Delhi, the next critical match is MI vs GT. GT holds an advantage with only 10 games played and already at 14 points. KKR is still in the mix; they could qualify with 17 points. Punjab can also reach 17 if they win one of their next three matches. One of these teams might advance based on net run rate. Thus, having an extra point doesn’t guarantee anything - net run rate must not be overlooked. This is why Punjab’s 37-run victory was crucial. The competition is still wide open,” Kumble concluded.
