Lisa Kudrow Defends Phoebe Buffay: 'She Wasn't Foolish'
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Los Angeles, April 5 (NationPress) Hollywood star Lisa Kudrow has clarified the perception surrounding her character, Phoebe Buffay, from the renowned sitcom 'Friends'.
The 62-year-old actress asserted that her character in the beloved show “wasn't foolish,” as reported by 'People' magazine.
During a conversation with actress Lily Tomlin for Interview Magazine, she stated, “Back then, people would say, 'She’s such a ditz. Why do you only portray ditzes?' And I pondered, Is she truly a ditz? To me, she wasn't.”
When questioned about who labeled Phoebe as a ditz, she responded, “Everyone did. In 1994, it was like, ‘I adore her. She’s such a ditz’. That was our definition of a ditz—someone who wasn’t conforming.” She reiterated, however, that her character “wasn't foolish.”
According to 'People', it took time for Kudrow to connect with her character on a personal level, but this connection developed throughout the show's extensive run.
“Initially, Phoebe was quite different from me. It required significant effort to rationalize her actions and dialogue. It was enjoyable, not frustrating. Over a decade, a bit of her personality influenced me. I became a bit more relaxed and explored spirituality to better understand her,” she remarked.
The legendary sitcom, which chronicled the lives of six friends in New York City, aired from 1994 to 2004 and featured stars like Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, and the late Matthew Perry. Phoebe was depicted as a musician with various jobs throughout the series.
Lisa Kudrow received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her memorable portrayal of the eccentric character.
