Chennai, April 20 (NationPress) The Madras High Court has recently issued summons regarding a petition that calls for an inquiry into potential discrepancies in the asset declarations made by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Vijay in his nomination affidavits for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

A Division Bench, which includes Chief Justice S A Dharmadhikari and Justice G Arul Murugan, has directed notices to Vijay, the Director General of Income Tax (Investigation), the Election Commission of India, and the Returning Officers for the Perambur and Tiruchy (East) constituencies.

The case has been scheduled for further proceedings next week.

During the hearing, the Bench made an oral remark indicating possible serious irregularities in the asset disclosures, specifically noting that assets valued at approximately Rs 100 crore were reportedly not included in one of the affidavits.

“This is a significant irregularity. More than Rs 100 crore has not been disclosed in one constituency,” the court stated.

The petition was initiated by V. Vignesh, a Chennai resident, who argued that there are marked inconsistencies between the affidavits presented by Vijay before the Returning Officers for Perambur and Tiruchy (East).

According to the petition, Vijay reported assets amounting to Rs 115.13 crore in his Perambur nomination, while his declaration for Tiruchy (East) was recorded at Rs 220.15 crore.

The petitioner pointed out that the significant variation between these two declarations remains unaccounted for and lacks supporting documentation. He asserted that such a discrepancy raises serious questions regarding possible suppression of assets, beneficial ownership structures, and the concealment of critical information.

Vignesh further contended that the inconsistency cannot be dismissed as mere clerical mistakes or estimation errors. He argued that one of the affidavits must be incorrect or that the financial disclosures themselves are flawed, warranting a comprehensive investigation by the Income Tax Department.

In seeking immediate action, the petitioner requested the court to instruct the Income Tax (Investigation) wing to scrutinize the asset declarations and provide a report to the respective Returning Officers.

He also advocated for the findings to be made public before polling day on April 23, allowing voters to make an informed choice.

This case is particularly significant as Vijay, a well-known actor-turned-politician, is competing in a high-stakes electoral contest in both constituencies.
