Maharashtra's Fisheries Minister Declares Ban on LED Fishing in Konkan
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, March 24 (NationPress) Maharashtra's Fisheries Minister, Nitesh Rane, declared on Tuesday a full-scale initiative against illegal LED fishing in the Konkan area, introducing a zero-tolerance stance to safeguard both traditional fishermen and marine ecosystems.
During a session in the House, Rane emphasized the state government's commitment to eradicating unauthorized LED fishing operations, resisting any external pressures from neighboring states like Gujarat or Goa.
“Our government is resolute in completely eliminating illegal LED fishing and will enforce stringent measures to accomplish this objective. Out of a total of 4,053 enforcement actions carried out recently across the state, around 2,000 were directed specifically at vessels employing illegal LED lighting. We will not succumb to any pressure or demands from neighboring states and will persist in confiscating violating boats,” he asserted.
Minister Rane cautioned that strict measures would be taken against any officials found to be facilitating or protecting these illicit activities.
To strengthen the local economy within the Konkan region, he unveiled several high-value initiatives, including the establishment of a Fisheries University, a fish seed center, and improvements in water transport.
“An independent Fisheries University will be set up in Devgad (Sindhudurg). A fish seed sub-center will be constructed in Vengurla with an investment of Rs 60 crore. Additionally, a significant allocation of Rs 6,600 crore has been made to upgrade water transport facilities, particularly in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg,” he detailed.
Furthermore, Rane addressed the pressing financial hardships faced by fishermen due to surging fuel prices. He informed the House that he has reached out to the Central Government to reclassify fishing cooperatives so they can benefit from retail pricing instead of being charged elevated “bulk consumer” rates.
He also advocated for the implementation of Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) support to help stabilize fuel expenses, which have been affected by conflicts in the Middle East and disruptions in global supply chains.
Minister Rane envisions transforming Maharashtra into a national frontrunner in shipbuilding and repair, leveraging the state's extensive coastline to develop a specialized maritime maintenance hub.
