Maharashtra Government to Launch Inquiry into College Fee Irregularities Led by Retired Judge
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, March 11 (NationPress) In light of serious allegations concerning inconsistencies in the college tuition fee setting process, Chandrakant Patil, the Minister for Higher and Technical Education, declared on Wednesday in the Legislative Assembly that a specialized inquiry panel will be established. This panel will be led by a retired High Court judge to thoroughly examine the situation.
This announcement was made following a motion raised by MLA Mahesh Shinde, with MLA Prashant Bamb also contributing to the dialogue.
Minister Patil clarified that the Fee Regulating Authority (FRA) is operational in the state, as mandated by the Supreme Court. Educational institutions are required to provide audited financial statements from the previous year. The fees are calculated by dividing the total approved expenditures by the number of enrolled students and are applicable for a three-year timeframe.
The Minister noted that numerous complaints have emerged, suggesting that colleges are artificially inflating their costs. “Specific irregularities include listing salaries for non-existent faculty members, incorporating expenses for construction projects that were never executed, and broadly increasing various costs to raise tuition fees,” he stated.
He also indicated, “Should the investigation uncover a widespread scam, the government will not hesitate to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT), submit FIRs, or involve the Economic Offences Wing (EOW).”
To guarantee a comprehensive and impartial investigation, a Deputy Secretary-level officer from the Higher and Technical Education Department will oversee the entire inquiry process, as stated by Minister Patil.
Additionally, he reiterated the government's dedication to education, highlighting that the state currently covers tuition fees for students from SC, ST, and OBC categories, as well as for girls from households earning up to Rs 8 lakh annually.
“The government is focused on ensuring that educational institutions maintain transparency and that no student is subjected to overcharging due to fraudulent accounting practices,” he concluded.
