Is Mamata Banerjee Criticizing PM Modi Over Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa's Birth Anniversary?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 19 (NationPress) As the Assembly elections draw near, the political landscape in West Bengal has become increasingly charged. On Thursday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee seized upon a post from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on X to express her criticism.
She called out the Prime Minister for his use of the term “Swami” when paying tribute to Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa during the observance of “Ramakrishna Jayanti”.
Reposting the Prime Minister's social media message on her X account, the Chief Minister characterized the incident as yet another instance of the PM's blatant cultural insensitivity towards revered figures from Bengal.
“Once again, our Prime Minister displays his cultural insensitivity toward great figures of Bengal. Today marks the janmatithi of Yugavatara (God's incarnation in our age), Sri Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsadeva. In his tribute, the PM erroneously attached an inappropriate prefix, “Swami”, to the great saint's name!” she stated in her post.
Banerjee further reminded her audience that while Ramakrishna Paramahamsa is commonly referred to as “Thakur” (God), his esteemed disciples are addressed as “Swamijis”.
She also highlighted the sacred trinity of the order consisting of “Thakur” (Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa), “Ma” (his wife and spiritual consort, Sarada Devi or Sarada Ma), and “Swamiji” (Swami Vivekananda), which is observed at Belur Math, the international headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission founded by Swamiji.
“It is well known that Sri Ramakrishna was venerated as Thakur (literally, God). Following his passing, his ascetic disciples established the Ramkrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission, and those monks were designated as “Swami” according to Indian traditions. However, the Master himself continued to be referred to as Thakur. The prefix “Swami” was intended for his disciples in the order, while the holy trinity remained Thakur-Ma-Swamiji. Here, Thakur is Sri Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsadeva, Ma is Ma Sarada, and Swamiji is Swami Vivekananda,” she added.
In closing her post, she urged the Prime Minister to avoid creating “new prefixes and suffixes for the great Renaissance figures of Bengal who have significantly influenced modern India.”
Last year, PM Modi had shared a similar tribute, stating in Hindi, “On behalf of all the countrymen, heartfelt salutations to Swami Ramakrishna Paramhansa ji on his birth anniversary.”
