Ahmedabad, April 20 (NationPress) The Crime Branch of Ahmedabad has detained a 31-year-old individual from Surendranagar district just hours after a social media post on X was deemed to have offended the sentiments of the Brahmin community and threatened public order, as reported by officials on Monday.
The detainee, recognized as Hasmukh, also known as Nikhil Chavda, resides in the Housing Board Society near the Police Line in Thangadh, Surendranagar district.
Police stated that the operation was initiated following the identification of a post from April 19 by a user named Nikhil Chavda, which included inflammatory comments aimed at the Brahmin community.
The technical division of the Crime Branch, responsible for monitoring social media for potentially divisive content, quickly began an investigation.
Employing both technical analysis and human intelligence, the team successfully located and arrested the suspect within a few hours, according to officials.
A case has been filed at the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) Police Station under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
Authorities reported that a mobile phone worth Rs 10,000 was confiscated as part of the evidence.
The arrest was preceded by various reactions across social media, both leading up to and following the police's intervention.
One post directed at the Gujarat Police stated: “Hello @GujaratPolice. His name is Nikhil Chavda, he lives in Gujarat, he is insulting our Bhagwan Parshuram and attempting to incite riots in peaceful Gujarat, arrest him before it’s too late.”
After the arrest, another user remarked, “Nikhil Chavda, who derided Bhagwan Parshuram yesterday, has now been apprehended. Reports indicate that Ahmedabad Police are taking strict measures. This should serve as a reminder... freedom of expression does not equate to disrespecting faith and beliefs.”
Another user claimed, “Nikhil Chavda was arrested in Gujarat for sharing blasphemous memes about Bhagwan Parshuram. He has been doing this for the past 3–4 years, and we have highlighted it on multiple occasions.”
Another comment read, “Thank you @HarshSanghavi for your unwavering support and quick action in addressing such anti-social elements.”
Police records reveal that the accused has a history of prior offenses.
These include a case at Thangadh Police Station in 2022 under Sections 354, 452, 504, and 506(2) of the Indian Penal Code, another case at the same station under Sections 66(1)(B) and 85 of the Prohibition Act, and a case at Vadaj Police Station under Sections 66(1)(B) and 85(1) of the Prohibition Act along with Sections 110 and 117 of the Gujarat Police Act.
