Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Raipur/Bijapur, Feb 7 (NationPress) In a significant advancement for Chhattisgarh's anti-Naxal efforts, 30 Maoist members from the South Sub-Zone surrendered to security forces in Bijapur on Saturday, coinciding with President Draupadi Murmu’s visit to Bastar. This event represents a major step forward in the state's rehabilitation and surrender initiative, symbolizing a transition from violence to peace and mainstream integration.
The surrendered individuals, consisting of 20 women and 10 men, renounced their armed struggle and anti-people ideology, committing to uphold the Indian Constitution and embrace a life of dignity in a democratic society. A total reward of Rs 85 lakh was announced on them, based on their roles, highlighting the value placed on their neutralization through peaceful means.
During the surrender ceremony, the members voluntarily handed over explosives, including one bundle of Cordex wire and 50 gelatin sticks. The event was witnessed by senior officials, including Deputy Inspector General of Police, CRPF Ops Bijapur Sector, BS Negi; Superintendent of Police Bijapur, Dr Jitendra Kumar Yadav; and other additional superintendents and deputy superintendents from operations and district forces.
Each surrendered member received immediate financial support of Rs 50,000 as an incentive, with ongoing legal procedures for their full rehabilitation and reintegration into society. This initiative aligns with the “Puna Margam: Rehabilitation to Rejuvenation” campaign — a flagship program of the Chhattisgarh government focusing on peace, dialogue, and development.
Officials characterized this as a platform not just for surrender but for fostering trust and a secure future. Bijapur Superintendent of Police, Dr Jitendra Kumar Yadav, urged remaining Maoists to abandon misleading and violent ideologies and return to the mainstream without fear. He emphasized that the 'Puna Margam' policy offers comprehensive support for a secure, respectable, and self-reliant future.
Inspector General of Police for the Bastar Range, Sundarraj P Pattilingam, commended the surrender as evidence of the declining Maoist organization. He attributed this success to the establishment of security camps in remote areas, enhanced connectivity, anti-Naxal operations, and effective implementation of government schemes.
“The path of violence leads to destruction, while 'Puna Margam' provides peace and a promising future,” he stated, encouraging others to lay down their arms.
In Bijapur district alone since January 1, 2024, 918 Maoist cadres have reintegrated into society, with 1,163 arrested and 232 killed in encounters.
These statistics reflect the combined efforts of security forces, including DRG, District Force, Chhattisgarh Armed Force, STF, CoBRA battalions, and various CRPF units, alongside coordinated actions from local administration, social organizations, and the community.
