Lucknow, July 26 (NationPress) The chief of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Mayawati, criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday for his comments acknowledging that the Congress party has not done enough for backward classes.
In his apology to the backward community, Rahul Gandhi confessed that both he and his party fell short in advocating for the backward classes, labeling it a mistake.
In response, Mayawati stated, “Rahul Gandhi has recognized that the Congress has not fulfilled the expectations of safeguarding the rights of the backward classes. This is nothing novel—it appears to be self-serving politics, where one says one thing privately and another publicly.”
In a post on X, Mayawati accused the Congress of lacking genuine commitment to the political and economic aspirations as well as constitutional rights of the OBC community, including their reservation rights.
She pointed out that this behavior is not new and mirrors the Congress party’s “sad and unfortunate” treatment of Dalits and tribals, which compelled these communities to establish their own political identity—BSP—out of self-respect and the desire for independence.
“Consequently, the Congress has lost power in key states, including Uttar Pradesh. After losing power, they seem to remember these communities, which appears to be crocodile tears,” she commented, adding that the BJP-led NDA has a similarly duplicitous attitude.
Mayawati further recalled how Congress administrations denied adequate reservation benefits to SC/ST communities, failed to honor B.R. Ambedkar with the Bharat Ratna during his lifetime, and withheld OBC reservations for nearly four decades post-independence.
She claimed that caste-based parties collectively undermined the reservation system, rendering it “inactive and ineffective.” In contrast, she asserted that the BSP has consistently been the genuine advocate for these communities, ensuring their security, dignity, and welfare during its tenure in Uttar Pradesh.
“The future of Bahujans lies solely in the assurance provided by the BSP. Dalits, tribals, and OBCs should not be misled by Congress, SP, or any other party. Their well-being and prosperity are contingent on supporting the BSP,” Mayawati declared.
