Meghalaya CM Sangma Defends Employment Policies Amid Opposition Criticism
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Shillong, Feb 26 (NationPress) Meghalaya's Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma, firmly dismissed opposition allegations regarding the ineffectiveness of the state's employment policies on Thursday. He emphasized that numerous governmental initiatives are actively creating jobs and fostering livelihood opportunities for the youth.
In response to queries from Trinamool Congress MLA Mizanur Kazi during an Assembly discussion, the Chief Minister highlighted that labeling the government's employment strategy as a failure is misleading. He pointed out that unemployment statistics vary depending on the source and should be assessed in context.
Referencing official reports, Sangma noted that the Periodic Labour Force Survey indicated Meghalaya's unemployment rate at 6.0% for 2022-23 and 6.2% for 2023-24. In contrast, the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) reported a significantly lower figure of 3.1%.
He stated that approximately 3.66 lakh jobs have been created in recent years through various schemes and initiatives.
Addressing the unique challenges posed by Meghalaya's young demographic, where nearly 50% of the population is under 20, the Chief Minister remarked, “Employment generation is an ongoing endeavor. Although we have not completely met our targets yet, we are progressing positively.”
Sangma highlighted key programs, such as the FOCUS scheme, which has allocated Rs 140 crore to 22,500 producer groups, benefiting around 2.1 lakh individuals. Additionally, the FOCUS+ initiative has reached another 1.5 lakh recipients.
The CM-Elevate program also saw a robust response, receiving over 22,000 applications within just 20 days, leading the government to temporarily close the application portal.
During the debate, the Chief Minister addressed concerns regarding the requirement for proficiency in Khasi and Garo languages for certain public sector positions. He clarified that this requirement pertains only to basic communication skills, not academic expertise, emphasizing that language familiarity is crucial for effective service delivery.
Sangma further announced plans to introduce Khasi and Garo language instruction at the primary school level, with textbooks currently in preparation.
On the topic of administrative reforms, he mentioned the digitization of employment exchanges and the enhancement of the CM-Connect platform to improve grievance redressal and monitoring of government initiatives.
“I assure the House that the impact of these programs will become even more significant in the near future,” the Chief Minister stated.
