In response to the incident, Chief Minister Conard K. Sangma announced that the Meghalaya government would conduct a thorough investigation and emphasized that accountability would be ensured.
"The Meghalaya government has mandated a detailed investigation into the matter. We will ensure accountability, and those found responsible will face stringent legal repercussions," he asserted.
He emphasized that there would be no leniency concerning public safety, affirming that the state will not compromise when it comes to protecting human lives.
"We will take all necessary legal and administrative actions based on the inquiry's findings," Chief Minister Sangma pledged. "In this moment of grief, the state stands united with all affected individuals," he added.
This incident is among the deadliest mining accidents in recent memory, with authorities confirming the recovery of at least 16 bodies following a massive explosion at a suspected illegal coal mine in the Thangsku area of Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills district, according to police reports.
East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police Vikash Kumar confirmed the fatalities in the accident, stating that rescue teams have so far retrieved 16 bodies from the site.
"So far, we have recovered sixteen bodies," Kumar informed IANS, adding that the search and rescue operation is still ongoing.
Officials noted that the ex-gratia relief is part of the Centre's immediate support for the victims of this tragedy, as rescue and investigation efforts continue at the site of the accident.
